Hungarian authorities issue Level three heat alert

(MENAFN) Hungarian health authorities have declared a Level 3 heat alert—the highest in the country—for all regions from Thursday through Sunday, based on forecasts from the national meteorological service.

The alert, issued by the national chief medical officer, follows predictions that average daily temperatures will exceed 27°C in many areas, with highs likely to climb above 35°C. Officials caution that such extreme heat can pose serious health risks to everyone, including healthy individuals. The last Level 3 alert was declared on June 24.

A nationwide fire ban has been in place since Sunday, prohibiting open flames in forests and within 200 meters of them, even in designated fire pits. Authorities warn that vegetation is so dry it could ignite from the smallest spark or heat source. Cooking over open flames or grilling is allowed in private gardens but must never be left unattended.

So far this year, 8,106 outdoor fires have been reported in Hungary, injuring 55 people and burning 93 million square meters of land. Officials urge residents to stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, caffeine, and high-sugar drinks, limit outdoor activities during peak heat, and never leave children, elderly individuals, patients, or pets inside parked vehicles.
